Exploring Object 221
Leave the TIU Bolshaya Sevastopol Hostel by 4x4 in the morning and drive 15km drive into the mountains outside Sevastopol to what was to be the Black Sea Fleet Command Complex...Object 221. The Complex consists of several square thousand metres of tunnels and chambers, on four levels, buried deep inside a mountain. The collapse of the Soviet Union saw the Complex abandoned although approximately 80% complete. The site now sits empty, unguarded, and largely forgotten..... an amazing relic of the Cold War
Then its an off-road 4x4 adventure high up onto the clifftops surrounding Balaklava to visit the British Crimean War fortifications and to see some of the most stunning views the Crimean coastline has to offer.
Next it's down to the port of Balaklava, formerly a highly classified 'closed city' within the USSR. Here you visit the decommissioned Underground Nuclear Submarine Base and its adjacent naval museum....and, if you fancy it, go for a swim in the Black Sea after all that adventuring!
Finally you are driven back to TIU Bolshaya Sevastopol in the afternoon. The tour (as outlined above) takes approximately 5 hours at a cost of 25 Euros per person, based on a party of four. Don't worry if you are travelling solo, since the tour operates out of the TIU Bolshaya Hostel, it is usually not difficult to assemble a group!
Variations on the tour itinerary are possible and negotiable. If you are interested in a tour while you are staying at TIU Sevastopol, please email Sylwia with your name and your hostel booking number.
